A Farewell Outing

Last Friday, June 22, the first ever Zero Robotics camp held in Armenia came to a close. The campers stayed up late to squeeze the enjoyment out of the waning minutes out of their time together, and they got up early to make sure their goodbyes were thorough. The same energy felt from the our campers saying goodbye to each other last week was felt this week when we joined back together to visit the COAF SMART Center in Debed. 

This visit to the SMART Center was originally planned to happen during the duration of the two weeks in Toros, but having to postpone a week ended up being a pleasant reunion for the campers and volunteers alike. The SMART Center is a project put on by the Childrens of Armenia Fund. The stated goal of COAF SMART is to bring state of the art education and resources to build the capacity in rural villages. The center will serve as an "idea acquisition and exchange hub", and is just the first of many centers planned in Armenia. 

What drew the Zero Robotics Camp to SMART this year was the shared interests in both robotics and information technology. This new center has an entire room dedicated to the teaching and learning of LEGO robotics, where youth can learn how to code the robots that they build. Even more accessible are the computers in the center, which are spread throughout the building in common areas and in private rooms. 

After a tour of the building and a insight into all of the opportunities waiting in the SMART center, our campers received a closing presentation from the camp's leader Mariam Avagyan. Mariam, talked briefly about Zero Robotics, its origins and its future here in Armenia, presenting to both our campers and some other guests in the center.

YES NGO Director, Hripsime Amirkhanyan, gave a closing talk to our campers as well. Hripsime had some parting wisdom and gifts for our campers, reminding them that their intelligence and ambition did not go unnoticed, and that their efforts in the future can be put forward to make their communities better places for everyone. The United Nations in recent years has defined a list of 17 sustainable development goals in order to encourage the world to fight poverty, injustice, and environmental degradation for everyone. Before getting back on the bus to drive back to their homes, this group of civilly minded youth were reminded that they are the ones that will see this development through in their communities and country, and the Zero Robotics Armenia 2018 Team is confident that they will too. 

Կրթության, Հայաստանի «ամենաներ»-ի և JAVA ծրագրավորման լեզվի մասին քննարկումներ մեր ճամբարում։

Հունիսի 16 ին ճամբարականների առօրյան առավել քան հագեցած էր։
Գյումրու տեխնոլոգիական կենտրոնում ակտիվորեն խմբերը իրականացնում են իրենց առջև դրված խնդիրները, մշակում ստրատեգիաներ, մրցում միմյանց հետ։ Ժամանակի սղության պատճառով, մեր երիտասարդները ինքնակամ հրաժարվել են նույնիսկ ընդմիջումներից՝ ասում են գործը ավելի կարևոր է, քան մեր ընդմիջումները։

Չնայած բոլոր պատանիների սիրելի օրերը դրանք շաբաթ և կիրակի օրերն են, սակայն ճամբարականները նույնիսկ այդ օրերին չեն հանգստանում, գրում են կոդեր և մի օրվա մեջ ընդունում և լսում չորս հյուր խոսնակների, ովքեր երիտասարդների հետ կիսվում են իրենց գիտելիքներով։
Օրվա առաջին հյուր խոսնակը Հայաստանի մանուկների հիմնադրամ կազմակերպության աշխատակից,  կրթության ոլորտի մասնագետ Սերոբ Խաչատրյանը։
Պարոն Խաչատրյանը երիտասարդների հետ քննարկեց հայաստանյան կրթական համակարգը, դրա թերությունները, առավելությունները։ Երիտասարդները ներկայացրեցին իրենց փոփոխության տեսլականները։

Հաջորդ խոսնակը Գոռ  Ալեքսանյանն էր, ով դասավանդում է Երևանի Պետական Համալսարանում։
Գոռը երիտասարդների համար պատրաստել էր գեղեցիկ պրեզենտացիա, Հայաստանի աշխարհագրական «ամենաների»-ի վերաբերյալ։ Երիտասարդները հնարավորություն ունեցան կրկին վերհիշել և սովորել Հայաստանի ամենբարձր և ցածր կետերը, ամենաերկար և ամենակարճ գետերը, ամենամեծ և ամենափոքր քաղաքներ և այլն։

Օրվա երորրդ հյուր խոսնակը ճամբարի մասնակիցների  սիրելի IT-ի ոլորտի փորձառու մասնագետ Գուրգեն Հայրապետյանն էր։ Գուրգենը երիտասարդներին ներկայացրեց JAVA script ծրագրավորման լեզվի առանձնահատկությունները։ Տեղում ցուցադրեց ծրագրի հետ պրակտիկ աշխատանքի դեմո ներկայացում։

Իսկ  նույն օրվա չորորրդ և վերջին հյուր խոսնակը բժշկուհի Անի Ավագյանն էր։ Անին երիտասարդներին սովորեցրեց առաջին բուժօգնության կանոնները, արագ արձագանքման առաջին հմտությունները և այլ անհրաժետ հմտություններ, որոնք երիտասարդները կկարողանան կիրառել իրենց ողջ կյանքի ընթացքում։

Starting the Week Out Right

Mondays can sometimes be hard. Coming off of a weekend filled with new adventures can leave even the hardest worker wishing there was more time to lay back and relax, not our campers, though!! Bright and early Monday morning, our campers threw on their backpacks and headed for the hills. The landscape of Shirak marz is defined by the large green rolling mountains, and this morning, our campers came to the base of them ready to get out and appreciate the beautiful their home in Toros has to offer.

The first obstacle, not 100 meters from camp, was a small creek. The creativity these youth have shown in their problem solving abilities transferred from the lab into the outdoors, as they balanced over a log, jumped across, and even waded through the water. After that began the slog uphill. Being immersed has benefits beyond the views. Some of our campers picked bouquets of flowers, others found edible mushrooms, and a few even decided a hike was a good time to test their own physical endurance and ran up the mountain. However they decided to hike, everyone made it to the top to enjoy the views.

After wandering back down the mountain through fields of wildflowers and pine groves, our campers were given lunch and a short time to relax before we had our guest speaker of the day. Hayk Mkrtchyan is the successful young businessman and creator of the card game Brainy, a game that helps people learn Armenian and English together. Not only did Hayk talk about the success he's found as a young man, but how he's growing his business and how giving back to his community has played into his success. 

As our kids are hard workers, the day didn't stop there. Our teams worked late into the night recording their video describing the code that they've created for the Zero Robotics Competition. In 45 each of the three teams explained their strategy. Currently they are working to edit the videos they've shot, and they will be present to the judges at MIT. 

A Trip to Byurakan

This past Saturday was an exciting day for our campers. We all packed inside of a van to transport us south to admire Armenia's only observatory. On the way down, our youth sung songs to keep the entire bus entertained. The atmosphere inside was filled with energy and anticipation. That energy was carried all the way to the observatory, where we played a couple of group games before starting out tour of Byurakan.


Byurakan Observatory is located south of Talin on the slopes of Mount Aragats. It was originally founded in 1946, and was put to good use by famous astrophysicist and Armenian, Victor Ambartsumian. During the time of the Soviet Union, the Byurakan Observatory was used as one of the main astronomy centers, wherein Ambartsumian made a number of significant discoveries in his field of science.

Our tour started first with the beautiful stone buildings near the entrance, and a brief discussion about Hambartsumyan. We were then led to his office. No pictures were allowed inside, but it was a sizable building with the same tan stone exterior. On display inside was a library of books on physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and so on, a number of awards from various scientific communities, and pictures of Hambartsumyan with dignitaries from around the world. Hambartsumyan was not only a leading mind for Armenia and the Soviet Union, but the entire world. One of those discoveries was that stars are currently being formed within our universe, and that they're being formed in groups.

The trip inside the telescope was maybe the most exciting part of visiting the observatory. We climbed three flights of stairs to reach the main telescope, a 2.6m cassegrain reflector. The awe of our campers was ignited, and they couldn't ask enough questions to satisfy their curiosity. "Do you believe in aliens? How expensive was it to build technology like this? How far away can you look with this telescope?" The onslaught of questions continued like this for twenty minutes before we had to start making our way out of the building to make room for the next group. This observatory proved to be a beautiful monument to science and discovery. 

For lunch, we hopped back into the busses and headed up the road to have a khorovats at an organic farm. This farm in particular produces 3 tonnes of strawberries a year, dried fruit, and souvenirs for travelers on top of the wonderful facilities provided to cook and eat. 

The kids were able to kick back and relax for a bit, watch the world cup, and play a few rounds of "Mafia". After we were done eating and drinking coffee, the owners were even nice enough to take us on a tour of the greenhouse and the facility where they dry and produce fruit products. 

Even after an extremely long day of adventure and discovery, the campers insisted that we have a dance party after dinner that night. It was a great way to end a fun filled day. 

AR և VR .ապագայի տեխնոլոգիա

Այս օրերին մեր ճամբարականները ակտիվորեն շարունակում են պատրաստվել օգոստոս ամսին տեղի ունենալիք ZeRo Robotics միջազգային մրցաշարին։
Արդեն հայտնի են մեր մրցակից երկրների ցանկը։ Հայաստանը ներկայացնող թիմը առաջին անգամ մրցելու է ԱՄՆ-ի և Ռուսաստանի հավաքականների հետ։
Մեր երիտասարդները շարունակում են պատրաստել տասնյակ ստրատեգիաներ, որոնք կարող են լուրջ հայտ ներկայացնել մրցույթում հաղթելու համար։

Երիտասարդներին լրացուցիչ աջակցելու և մոտիվացնելու նպատակով երեկ ճամբարականներին իր այցով ուրախացրեց "ARLOOPA" հայկական հավելվածի համահեղինակ Արման Աթոյանը։
Արմանը երիտասարդներին ներկայացրեց "ARLOOPA"-ի թիմի  կողմից իրականացվող բազմաթիվ ծրագրեր, որոնք արդեն իրականացվել են և իրականացվում են Հայաստանի տարածքում և դրա տարածքից դուրս։ Երիտասարդների հետ քննարկեց AR և VR ապագայի հավելվածները։ Ներկայացրեց իրենց կողմից իրականացված NASA Apps Armenia ծրագիրը, որին մասնակցել են տարբեր դպրոցական երիտասարդներ, գրանցել հաջողություններ։
Երիտասարդները հնարավորություն ունեցան անհատական զրույցներ և քննարկումներ կազմակերպել, լսել իրենց հուզող հարցերի պատասխանները։

Չնայած նախապես մշակված ճամբարային օրակարգի, երիտասարդները հրաժարվում են իրենց ազատ ժամանակը օգտագործել ազատ խաղերի, հանգստի վրա և հաճախ խմբային քննարկումները, գործնական պարապմունքները շարունակում են մինչև ուշ գիշեր։

The Importance of Soft Skills

Before dinner, on June 12th, campers were given the opportunity to hear a discussion on the importance of soft skills in its relation to personal and professional development. Narek Tutkhalyan spoke on a number of papers by scholars from universities including Harvard, Stanford, and Michigan.

Soft skills are attributes that assist in interpersonal relationships which are essential in the workplace. These skills include problem solving, negotiating, emotional awareness and regulation, and time management. This list is by no means exhaustive, but rather it goes to show how interpersonal communication and self-awareness is vital when considering the employability of individuals.

In one paper written by Achyuta Adhvaryu of the University of Michigan, Namrata Kala of Harvard University, and Anant Nyshadham of Boston University, discuss the significant findings when female garment workers were given soft skill training. In productivity, workers who were given training increased 12 percent. In a related nine month program, one company saw a 256 percent return on investments.

These sorts of studies, and talks from our local leaders who have spent years developing their own soft skills, help demonstrate to our campers how important it is to begin developing soft skills at their age. As these youth go into university and develop their different areas of expertise, the ability to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds, adapt to new environments quickly, and other sorts of soft skills will help carry them above competition in the workplace. 

Խաղերի ստեղծումը և կյանքի պլանավորումը։

Ճամբարային երորրդ օրը կրկին  հագեցած էր։
Օրվա առաջին մասում ճամբարականները GTC-ում շարունակեցին   Google blockly-ի ծրագրավորման լեզվի ուսումնասիրությունը։
Մասնակից երիտասարդները հաջողությամբ սերտում են մատուցվող նյութերը, առաջարկում նոր լուծումներ։
Մասնակիցներից Կառլենը, ով  ճամբար է եկել Ամասիա համայնքից` նշում է.
"Ճամբարի առաջին օրերին իմ համար անհավատալի էր, որ ես մասնակցում եմ մի ծրագրի, որը իրականացվում է աշխարհռչակ NASA կազմակերպության կողմից։ Ունեի  վախեր, որ կարող է իմ մոտ ոչինչ չստացվի, չկարողանամ սերտանել այն ամենը, ինչ այստեղ մեզ մատուցվում է։ Բայց հիմա կարող եմ վստահ ասել, որ պատրաստ ենք նույնիսկ հաղթելու աշխարհի ամենաուժեղագույն թիմերին և մի օր հայտնվելու NASA-ում"։

Համաձայն ճամբարային օրակարգի, օրվա երկրորդ մասը ճամբարականները ընդունեցին հյուր խոսնակներին։
Օրվա առաջին հյուր խոսնակը Նարեկ Աղեկյանն էր, ով ղեկավարում է " Noor Games" խաղային ծրագրերի ստեղծան ՏՏ կազմակերպությունը։ Հյուր խոսնակը երիտասարդների համար պատրաստել էր ներկայացում Խաղերի ստեղծման վերաբերյալ, ինչը մեծ հետաքրքրություն առաջացրեց երիտասարդների մոտ։ Նախատեսված 40 րոպե հանդիպման փոխարեն, հանդիպումը տևեց 1 ժամ 30 րոպե։)))

Քչերը գիտեն, որ հայտնի հաղորդավար Մամիկոն Սիմոնյանը, տիրապետում է նաև կարողությունների զարգացման, մոտիվացիոն դասընթացներ վարելու տեխնիկաներին։
Առաջին բացահայտողներից եղան նաև մեր երիտասարդները, ովքեր Մամիկոնին ճանաչում էին միայն  որպես  Հանրային Հեռուստաընկերության հաղորդավար։

Մամիկոնը այդ օրը հանդես եկավ որպես հյուր խոսնակ և երեխաներին ներկայացրեց Maind Maping կամ Մտքի քարտեզագրման տեխնիկանները և գործիքները։ Ի դեպ Մամիկոնը Հայաստանում այն առաջին մարդկանցից էր, ով լսելով ծրագրի մասին, առաջարկեց ծրագրի կազմակերպիչներին  հյուրընկալվել Հանրային Հեռուստաընկերություն և մարդկանց պատմել ծրագրի  մասին։

Հյուր խոսնակների հետ հանդիպումներից հետո, ճամբարականները, հնարավորություն ունեցան նաև անհատական քննարկումներ իրականացնել, խոսել իրենց հուզող հարցերից։ Ինչպես նաև առաջին հյուր խոսնակ Նարեկ Աղեկյանին խոստացան, որ  ապագայում ստեղծելու են  իրենց խաղերը և դառնալու են հայտնի խաղերի հեղինակներ։

 

Օրը ավարտվեց ավանդական խմբային լուսանկարով։
